Characters, credits and minutes — how they relate

Three units describe the same script. The characters are what you have (paste your text and count them). The credits are what ElevenLabs charges — about one per character on standard text-to-speech, so your character count is essentially your credit cost. The minutes are what you get: our renders measured 826–915 credits per finished minute depending on the voice, so roughly 871 characters (the mean) become one minute of narration at default pacing — about 140–150 words a minute.

Two cautions the converter can’t show. First, retakes rebill the full character count, so an expressive read that needs three takes costs three times the credits. Second, this 1-credit-per-character rule is standard TTS only — Music and Dubbing meter far faster.
