The ladder, decoded: what each tier actually buys
Starter ($6) is the commercial floor — license, instant voice cloning and Music commercial use all start there. Creator ($22) is the working tier for a weekly publishing schedule. Pro and above buy volume and seats, not better audio.
The jump that matters is Free → Starter: $6 turns evaluation audio into licensed audio (the free tier is non-commercial with title attribution, and upgrading never retro-licenses old takes). The second jump, Starter → Creator, is volume math: 36 minutes versus 2.4 hours a month, with professional voice cloning added. Past Pro, the per-minute rate flattens at ~$0.14 — Scale and Business are seat-and-throughput purchases.
Two conversions to keep handy: standard TTS burns roughly 1 credit per character (a 1,000-word script ≈ 6,000 credits), and the non-TTS features meter much faster — Eleven Music ~900 credits and Dubbing ~2,000 per minute. The credits explainer has the full unit math, and the calculator converts any amount.
The three billing rules that change the real cost
Paid credits roll over (up to two months' quota, max 3× balance); annual billing is 10 months for 12 with credits still arriving monthly; and prepaid pay-as-you-go replaced overage billing — $5 minimum top-ups that expire in 12 months.
Rollover is the quiet discount: a bursty schedule can run a tier lower than its monthly average suggests, because quiet months bank into loud ones — but downgrading or cancelling forfeits the balance. Annual pricing knocks the equivalents to $5 (Starter), $18.33 (Creator) and $82.50 (Pro) a month; the pool still drips monthly, and annual → monthly isn't an offered path.
Running past the quota is now strictly prepaid: PAYG top-ups draw after subscription credits, have no monthly cap, and die 12 months after purchase — no surprise overage invoices, and no service past a $0 balance either.
Which tier fits which job
Free for auditioning voices; Starter for licensed low-volume work; Creator for a weekly narration schedule; Pro for audiobook/API-scale output. If your work is slide-synced e-learning, compare Murf's hour-metering before deciding.
Match the tier to finished output, not credit counts: a weekly 1,000-word video needs ~24,000–30,000 credits a month with retake headroom — Starter with rollover, comfortably Creator without. Daily publishing or audiobook chapters push into Pro, where 12 hours a month runs ~$0.14 a minute — still far below human VO rates.
The cross-shop worth doing: Murf prices in hours per year ($8.25–9.50 per generated hour) and wins slide-synced corporate work on workflow; ElevenLabs wins expressiveness per dollar. The head-to-head with raw audio and the full ElevenLabs review (12.5s measured, 4 raw samples) carry the evidence.
Which tier fits which job
| Your job | Plan | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Auditioning voices, evaluation only | Free ($0) | ≈12 min, non-commercial, attribution required |
| Licensed low-volume work | Starter ($6) | ≈36 min/mo — the commercial floor + instant cloning |
| A weekly narration schedule | Creator ($22) | ≈2.4 hours/mo + professional voice cloning |
| Audiobook / API-scale output | Pro ($99) | ≈12 hours/mo at ~$0.14 a finished minute |
Match the tier to finished output, not credit counts; rollover lets a bursty schedule run a tier lower.
Sizing the tier to your monthly minutes
Starter’s 30,000 credits is 33-36 finished minutes a month and Creator’s 121,000 is 132-147, converted at our measured 826-915 credits a minute. Prices here were read Jul 19, 2026 — the live page is the authority before you buy.
