Runway Refund Policy (2026): The 30-Day Rule and the Accidental-Annual Fix

Runway's refund has a 30-day window with an 'unused or close to unused' condition — and if you accidentally bought annual, there's a documented switch that credits the difference back rather than leaving you stuck for a year.

Direct answer

Runway offers a refund within 30 days if your subscription is unused or close to unused, or if you bought credits within 30 days and haven't used them — requested through the help icon's AI Assistant, which auto-approves eligible cases. Consumed credits are not refundable on quality grounds; they auto-return only when a generation ends in an error. If you accidentally chose an annual plan, you can switch to monthly in Plans and billing and Runway credits the price difference to your account as a balance. Note that requesting a plan refund immediately drops you to the free tier and forfeits unused plan credits. Verified against Runway's help center July 2026.

Subscription refunds are discretionary even inside 30 days ('close to unused' is Runway's judgment). Consumed credits never refund except on a generation error.

The 30-day window and the 'unused' condition

Runway refunds a subscription within 30 days if it's unused or close to unused, and a credit purchase within 30 days if the credits aren't used. Requests go through the help icon's AI Assistant, which approves eligible cases automatically.

Runway frames refund eligibility around two paths. For subscriptions: "You purchased or renewed your subscription within the last 30 days, and since the time of initial purchase or renewal, your subscription to the Services is unused, or close to unused." For credit purchases: bought within 30 days and not yet used. "Close to unused" is Runway's discretion, not a fixed threshold — so light exploratory use may still qualify, but heavy use won't.

You request through the help icon at the top-right of the dashboard or a generative session; Runway's AI Assistant auto-approves if you're eligible or escalates to a human. There's one consequence to time carefully: when a plan refund is granted, plan access and any unused plan credits are lost immediately and the account drops to free the instant the refund is initiated. Don't request until you've used whatever you intend to use that period.

Consumed credits aren't refundable (except on errors)

Runway does not refund credits spent on generations you didn't like — credits pay for the generation process, not the output quality. Credits are automatically returned only when a generation ends in a technical error.

This is the part that catches people who expected a satisfaction guarantee. Runway is explicit: "Credits are only automatically returned when a generation ends in a generation error… Credits power the generation process itself, not the quality of the output." So a clip that generated successfully but looks wrong is not a refundable event; a clip that failed with an error returns its credits automatically, usually within minutes.

Because generative video burns credits fast, this makes the free tier's 125 one-time credits and a careful first session worth more than usual — you're paying per attempt regardless of whether the attempt pleases you. Our [Runway review](/reviews/runway) covers what the credit allowances translate to in practice.

The accidental-annual-plan fix

If you meant to buy monthly but selected annual, switch in Plans and billing → Update Plan → the Monthly tab, and Runway credits the price difference to your account as a balance. For cash back instead, submit a support ticket with the annual invoice.

Runway has a documented remedy for the common annual-by-mistake purchase. If the charge already went through: Dashboard → Plans and billing → Update Plan → toggle the Monthly tab → pick your plan → Confirm. In Runway's words, "the difference in payment between the annual plan and the monthly plan will be automatically administered onto your account as a balance credit."

If you'd rather have the money back than a Runway balance, the path is different: "submit a support ticket with the annual payment's invoice attached." And if the charge is still pending rather than settled, cancelled transactions sit outstanding for about 24 hours — wait a day, then re-select the correct plan.
