Is Synthesia $18 or $29 a month?

Both, on different billing bases — and Synthesia's own page currently adds a third, stale answer. The plan cards (read Aug 13, 2026): Starter is $29/month billed monthly, or $18/month billed yearly, $216 a year. The FAQ lower on the same page still says '$29 per month or $264 with an annual plan' — the annual price from before Synthesia's July cut. The cards are what checkout charges.

The four Starter prices circulating in third-party roundups — $14, $18, $22, $29 — are mostly this one page quoted at different times and different billing bases. $29 is monthly billing today. $18 is annual billing today. $22 is the old annual rate ($264/year), which survives in Synthesia's own FAQ even though the cards stopped showing it after the July cut we logged on Jul 25. Anything else is stale.

Creator has the same double answer: cards say $89 monthly or $64/month billed yearly ($768); the FAQ still answers $804. What $29 actually buys over the free plan

Not minutes. Basic and Starter both include 10 minutes of video a month on Synthesia's own grid. Starter buys the MP4 download (Basic cannot download videos at all), 125+ AI avatars against Basic's 9, and paid-tier features up the sharing column. The minute cap moves only at Creator: 30 a month for $89 ($64 annual).

That makes the free plan a genuine trial and a terrible production tier: you can make 10 minutes of video a month but you cannot take any of it with you. The download gate — not a minute gate — is the paywall. For anyone producing video that leaves the browser (a client deliverable, an LMS upload, anything embedded), Basic structurally cannot ship it, at any quality, in any month.

Read the grid the other way and Starter's audience is precise: people who need to hand a finished MP4 to someone, in modest volume. Ten minutes a month is two or three short training modules or one longer explainer, finished, downloadable, from a 125-avatar library. If your bottleneck is volume rather than delivery, skip the middle tier entirely — Creator's 30 minutes at $64/month annual is the first plan whose upgrade is measured in minutes.

The watermark wording that left the page

As of Aug 13, 2026, the word 'watermark' does not appear anywhere on synthesia.io/pricing. When we read the same page on Jul 19, the free tier was described as watermarked with no downloads. The rule the page now states is the download gate; whatever the current watermark policy is, the pricing page no longer says it.

This is the same documentation pattern we logged with InVideo's free-plan export count: a limitation that used to be printed stops being printed, while third-party pages keep quoting the old wording indefinitely. We are not claiming Synthesia's free output stopped being watermarked — we cannot verify that from the pricing page, and we have not run a free-tier export to check. What we can date is the wording: present in our Jul 19 read, absent in our Aug 13 read.

Practically, the distinction barely matters, because the download gate dominates: free videos cannot leave Synthesia as files at all, watermarked or not. The real decision is the billing basis, not the tier

Starter costs $348 a year billed monthly and $216 billed yearly — a 38% gap for the identical plan. That spread is bigger than the $29-vs-$0 question most comparisons obsess over. Decide whether you will still be producing video in month six; if yes, annual is the only rational basis, and if no, Starter monthly for the delivery months beats either.

The grid prices commitment, not features: every paid tier's yearly basis is roughly 28-38% under its monthly basis, and the annual plans state their allowances as yearly pools (120 Starter minutes, 360 Creator). For a steady publishing schedule that pooling is neutral-to-helpful; for a two-month project it means monthly billing is the honest option despite the worse rate, because an annual plan you stop using in month three costs more per shipped minute than monthly ever did.
